Steps Towards a Better Tomorrow

The overarching process of counseling changes and adapts from the first contact to termination. It is a fluid process in which a series of continuous and recurring exchanges take place between a licensed counselor and a client, either an individual, couple, or group. They work together to set goals, create and implement strategies, and evaluate the client’s progress towards their goal(s). Throughout this process new information is gathered and incorporated, the collaborative partnership is developed, and growth toward the counseling goals are reevaluated. It becomes the process of fluid action and change towards the target of a new self.

The process begins when the client (an individual, couple, family, or group) notices a change in their life, and those changes fail to enable an individual to live their life as they desire. This drives the client to seek help in finding a clear idea or understanding of what is going on within themselves. They desire someone to walk alongside and assist in deepening their self-awareness by working on issues that are hindering them from a fuller life.

A counselor will work over the first few sessions to gain a clear picture of what the client is struggling with and why the client is seeking help (see First Visit for more information). Through this process the counselor will assess the individual, couple, or family and identify their needs, goals, and any possible mental health diagnoses. Next, the counselor will provide the client with an understanding of any diagnosis given, and work with the client toward a plan for treatment. The plan will include a list of goals the client hopes to reach, and steps the counselor will guide the client through to achieve them. Through the process of change the client gains hope and a fresh understanding of themselves.
