What is Counseling and How can it be Helpful?
Counseling is a professional, collaborative relationship between a licensed counselor and an individual, couple, family, or group seeking help for difficult times in their life. Counseling is a process that takes time but gives long-lasting results! It is a process of sharing your inner self with an objective, licensed professional who supports, encourages, and gives hope while helping you work toward becoming mentally and emotionally healthy! Talking with someone who truly listens can transform your life!
A counselor will offer a supportive, confidential, and a non-judgmental environment for the client to share their story and identify goals. Perhaps you don’t know what your mental health concerns are or what goals you need to reach. All you know is you don’t want to feel a certain way any longer. A counselor is trained to help you sort through your feelings and problem areas, while helping you identify goals to work toward during the counseling process. The counselor takes on the role of a supportive collaborator in helping the client resolve conflicts with others, understand feelings of anxiety or depression, and investigate new solutions to old problems.
Counselors can provide solutions to a client’s difficulties through increasing a client’s self-awareness of emotional and mental turmoil, improving communication, offering coping skills to managing problem areas, encouraging a client as they discover new ways of thinking, strengthening self-esteem, giving hope when there seems no way out, and guiding a client towards positive mental health.
